The Switch to Alkaline Water
As many of you know, my mama went through cancer treatment in 2016/2017. She is doing very well now, thank God, but those were extremely terrifying times. One day felt like a molasses-slow month and it was a great chore to get out of bed and go about this rat-race life for five days a week as well as keeping sane, but thank God that is all behind us now *fingers crossed*.
At the onset of her treatment, I set about changing her diet and I confess, I go ham on reading on nutrition with a lot of articles advising to reduce or eliminate certain food groups or preaching to go pure vegan.
I want us to start small and eliminate certain foods but going pure vegan?? That is going to be tough…or never. Before this, we were “regular” eaters: copious amounts of meat, dairy, carbs of any kind, fruits and a fair portion of vegetables as a part of our normal Nigerian diet.
Mum’s childhood friend tells her to start drinking alkaline water.
“Which one is alkaline water again?” I think to myself.
My sole reference point for alkaline water is all the celebrities drinking and endorsing several bottled brands with a bottle costing more than regular water. We drink water from the faucet and NYC has one of the cleanest tap water in the country but with this diagnosis, we need our water to be cleaner.
Nevertheless, I research purchasing some alkaline water online and Amazon sells 12 or 24-pack bottles, but I figure that the most cost-effective way of doing this is to buy an alkaline water pitcher, where I can fill it with tap water and get filtered alkaline water minutes later.
So, tab open, I log onto Amazon, search for an alkaline water pitcher, click on a highly reviewed one and proceed to checkout. I’m asked whether I require filter packs as well.
“Silly me! How can you buy a filtered pitcher without filters?” I scold myself.
I choose the 4-pack option, pay, and my alkaline water pitcher arrives days later. I read instructions on cleaning, care and replacement times, and get to filling the pitcher for an inaugural drink.
Fast forward two years later and alkaline water is what we drink at home and I even take some to work in my recycled glass refillable bottle.
An alkaline water pitcher covers two important aspects for me: path to healthy nutrition and the elimination of plastic waste.
We know about single-use plastic pollution from consumer products especially and in addition, a scientific survey has shown that there are micro-plastics within global bottled water brands. Read the enlightening findings here. Furthermore, an alkaline water pitcher will help in a zero waste lifestyle transition as America’s bottle water consumption continues to increase because consumers are moving away from less healthy beverage options.

Tips For An Alkaline Water Pitcher

- Swap out filters according to instructions or every 6 weeks, depending on use
- Use alkaline water for tea or coffee making

- The filters can be recycled at your municipal drop-off centre. Do not trash!

August 9, 2018 at 2:00 pmFor a while I also drank alkaline water. I dunno why I stopped. Maybe it’s because I had to buy it from another supermarket other than the one I frequent. But I should drink it again. 😀

August 9, 2018 at 6:07 pmTap water is so often cloudy that it pains me to drink straight from the kitchen faucet. I will be looking into making the switch to and purchasing an alkaline water filter.
admin
August 9, 2018 at 6:09 pmI run my faucet for 10 straight minutes before the cloudiness disappears. Ridiculous! It’s a waste of water but it has to be done.

November 3, 2018 at 1:45 pmDrinking natural alkaline water is generally considered safe, since it contains natural minerals. However, you should use caution with artificial alkaline water, which likely contains fewer minerals than necessary for good health than its high pH would have you believe, and may contain contaminants.

March 11, 2019 at 2:38 pmI’ve drank alkaline water for the better part of my life and it seems so tasteless when I’m drinking water that isn’t. In fact, I carry my bottle of alkaline water anywhere I go to.

March 11, 2019 at 11:59 pmMe too! I fill my reusable bottle with alkaline water from my pitcher.
